Don't Be a Halloweenie
This Halloween season, thousand, tens of thousand, potentially millions of Americans will be shopping on Shein, Amazon, and other fast fashion sites for elaborate costumes. While the Holidays are a great time for festivities, here are some tips to remain sustainable.
The Fashion you Seek is Already in the Thrift Store
Don't pay the tariff upcharge and create more trash in mass overproduction. Thrift shops have become saturated with items from Shein, trending last month and retired for poor fit. Brand new pieces are going unworn, and they're likely nearly identicalÂ
Try to Refrain from three digit hauls
Poverty and strife is a result of the workaholic, extractionist culture we live in. It isn't wrong to want new things, and its only human to crave dopamine from the little pleasures, like affordable items. The catch is, many of these items are: a)not new, b)designed to trick you into reinvesting your money into an extractionist system. The hauls you see online are meant to entice you, so the influencer will make money while you spend it. Investing in quality pieces, or recognizing that many thrifted pieces have been unworn, can be a gamechanger.
Mending, Repair, and Design!
So much of what we crave and desire can be made. Reach out to your artistic friends, or parents and grandparents, for help mending clothes, accessorizing them with paint or embroidery, and more. While looking "trendy" is about conformity, the unique individual prints and designs are what make an individual truly stylish. Additionally, they're not steeped in child labor, soulless production, or global desecration.
Challenge Yourself
The revolution will not come without compromise. Are there any pieces in your closet that can be reused?
Thank you all for reading, and have a wonderful day.
